Workshops AVDP 15

ARRANGING MOVEMENT IN FILM – A study in Film-Choreography

Movement seems to be the crucial common point between choreography and cinematography. But how can physical and cinematic movements be arranged, composed, and interwoven with each other?

If we define choreography as the organization of bodies in time and space, we can ask ourselves which choreographic possibilities open up when bodies, time and space themselves become movable objects in a cinematic world. In the first part of the workshop we will have a deeper look into theoretical and historical aspects of the hybrid art form. We will discover the various methods and strategies which can be used to connect dance and film through a close and precise study of selected dance films.

Arranging Movement in Film Hand c Sarah Mller

In the second part of the class we will transfer the collected knowledge into practice. Based on a score each participant will conceive and realize a small film-choreographic study that explores specific tools on how to relate physical movement and the camera eye, on how to create rhythm and tension by playing with stasis and motion.

The aim of the workshop is to provide conceptual knowledge on the hybrid film format, and to support the participants in the development and enhancement of their own ideas for dance films. It serves as a platform for inspiration and intense exchange and encourages the participants to sharpen their own artistic approach.

The class is a spin-off of a more comprehensive workshop I offer regularly, both online and on-site.

Sarah Möller studied media culture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Université Lumière Lyon II and the University of Potsdam. Currently she is working on a PhD-Thesis at Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2012, she has been working for the international dance film festival POOL in Berlin, being today one of the co-directors. She is especially interested in the various ways of interweaving image and dance movement. Additionally, she has been invited as a film programmer, lecturer, and jury member for several international dance film festivals and exhibitions.
